Math vs. Zombies iPad game!

My students have become totally addicted to a game that I initially ignored as too much game, and not educational enough.

Was I wrong!  Math vs. Zombies is a computation game that has students race to answer facts before the zombie gets too close. Once the fact is answered, the zombie turns back into a person! The math, however, is what makes me most happy!

It makes a great review for all the basics, and kids can go back and redo any level once it's open.
The math progression is well-planned. In the easy setting, the math level 1 is basic addition, then tougher single digit, then teens digits adding single digit, then double digit adding a single digit, then tens adding tens, and then double digit adding a double digit, ALL WITHOUT regrouping! Great warm-up for all students, and then they can move up to medium and hard levels! And the same goes for subtraction, multiplication and division!

But most importantly, the game is fun! The kids love it so much, I'm making a bulletin board for the kids to keep track of their level and operation.

Try this one out with your kids!

Interactive Addition with Regrouping

Here's a neat site for helping children understand what is happening in addition and subtraction problems. Just move the blocks, or click and hold the number and move them all at once.

http://flash4ed.com/math/regroup.html

I'm still looking for a carrying/regrouping page, if anyone has a link...

Navigating Stark School!

Welcome to my blog! In this space, I post some great links I have found that you might find interesting!

Our school will be holding a conference of workshops explaining many of the wonderful things we do at Stark, and sharing how parents and families can become involved in helping our children become the best students they can be!  Called Navigating Stark School, it is modeled on other workshops given periodically by the Stamford district or individual schools in Stamford.

We want you as parents to become partners with us, in order to make the most of your Stark School experiences. Come join our Stark family, as we prepare your child to succeed in the world. We have many ways that you can help us, and we can help you. Let us tell you about these great opportunities!

I will be talking about Everyday Mathematics, the mathematics curriculum mandated by the State of Connecticut, and briefly dicuss Connecticut's joining Common Core and the Smarter Balance States.

Geometer Sketch Pad, for FREE! Hooray!

Hi Everybody!

Here's a new link I found! A free version of Geometer Sketch Pad (GSP)!  GSP has the power to be one of the most creative tools for instruction today!  Mostly because kids are free to do anything they want.  A digital sketchpad, if you will, with the mathematics tools to make amazing math happen (with the right direction and perserverance on the part of a child).

Many tools are disabled, like saving your work, but for a novice just trying it out, it's great!

Enjoy it!

Thank you to McGraw Hill for this wonderful introduction!

I may very well have posted this website before, but I love his classroom resources, like the lunch count chart and the calmness counter!  Also, his spelling apps seem neat, my daughters will be trying them at home.

http://www.ictgames.com/

It is an English site, but they have been using Interactive Whiteboard technology for a few years. Mr. Barrett has also been doing this about as long as I have, so I like noticing his growth and progress over the years...

Thank you, Mr. Barrett.

Sincerely,

Peter Kinahan

Grover, Elmo, Marshmallows, Dan Ariely and Steven Colbert

I was reading this article today, and I found the links humorous!

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/businessdesk/2013/04/the-plusses-and-pitfalls-of-te.html

Interesting thought here. Are we really doing our children any favors by giving them everything? Is our nation too enchanted with instant gratification?

Very Funny! Does he really get paid to do this?

Timez Attack! Links

This website is the place where you download a FREE 3-D video game. Made by Playstation game developers for their own children, it was so good it took on a life of its own. Now they have a division game and an addition/subtraction game (that reminds me of AVATAR the movie, the graphics are that good).

They give away a free version, hoping parents will see the value and upgrade to the paid version. It is worth the money.

Remember, this game TEACHES multiplication, rather than practices it.

Download the school version, and teachers can see your child’s results. Use the home version if your internet connection is weak. The home version does not need to be Internet connected, the School version does.

Dreambox Learning

Dreambox Learning is a pay site that uses adaptive learning, i.e. the computer responds to right and wrong answers and adjusts the questions accordingly. It is around twenty dollars, and many people like it and speak highly of it.

Common Core Links

Within a few years, Connecticut and 47 other states will be migrating to Common Standards among all states. While it matches our current standards (80% in L.Arts, 92% math), Conn. will be changing CMT to match it in 2014-2015. Connecticut is part of the Smarter Balanced consortium, one of the two creating the tests.
